Coiled baskets

I made these two little baskets from raffia. I'd seen the technique on Ray Mears' TV programmes and thought it didn't look too difficult. They turned out OK - although it's really tricky to build the edges up at the correct angle (the one on the right was my first attempt and wasn't supposed to be that shape)!

My next plan is to try this with home-made nettle cordage...

I'm such a geek :)

  1. Not geeky. Super cool!

I wonder whether the museum might be interested in this sort of thing - you teaching a workshop of how to do it, I mean. Would you like me to ask them?

  2. Thank you - but I'll need a million years practice before I do anything like that! :)

  3. They're great! Go on, do a workshop. Go on, go on, go on. Could you show me how to do it?

  4. No! I mean - of course I'll show *you* how to do it but no workshops! :)

  5. Those are really lovely little baskets - I didn't know that Ray Mears did anything so pretty!

  6. Thank you! I think it was a guest on the show who actually did the basketry, but Ray Mears is a talented guy you know! :)

  7. I know - I feel like I have lived with him for some years, as my younger son is mad keen on all that outdoor survival type of stuff. I quite like the frilly firesticks, too! Not so keen on the eating bugs type of thing, though, being as I am vegetarian!

  8. I think the baskets are great - how do you make them?

I don't suppose you could post a link to a site, or some simple instructions?

The raffia ones and the recycled carrier bags - genius!

  9. If you google for coiled baskets you should be able to find tutorials. I didn't do it *properly* - just coiled up strips of raffia and sewed them together (rather randomly) as I went along :)
