0655/1926 Notes from today

Saw: butterflies (a peacock, a tortoiseshell, a white one). A goldfinch who lives near me.
Leaves unfurling: apples, brambles, raspberries, hops, gooseberries.
Flowering: bluebells, pak choi, alexanders, gage (nearly).
Excited about: rhubarb, strawberries, walking onions.
Might be dead: bay tree, kumquats.
Sowed: beetroot, lettuce, mini sunflowers, the contents of the bottom of my seed tin.
Re-potted: chilli. Also potted up the mint I rescued from a very alcoholic cocktail in a bar.
Picked: nettles, but left some for the ladybirds (who are in love). Also ground elder and sorrel.
Could have picked: parsley, chives, rosemary, thyme.
Tested: my foraging apron. It was a gift from the lovely and very talented Claire Smith.
Most happy about: British Summer Time :)

  1. Hooray, I hope your foraging apron passed the test!
I'm (finally!) digging a hole for the blackcurrant plants this afternoon. :)

    1. It's brilliant, thank you! I think it'll really come into its own in the autumn for collecting apples, walnuts, chestnuts etc. Can't imagine it'll stay white for very long though... :)

  2. I'm picking sorrel, but from my garden because the sheep have eaten all the sorrel in the field.

Otherwise nettle, ground elder, garlic mustard and wild garlic and I have some dandelions lined up for dandelion beer. (I've not tried it before, so we'll see!)

I've promised to make nettle gnocchi, so I'd better pick more nettles soon.

    1. I don't blame the sheep, sorrel is very tasty! Not so sure about the garlicky things, but I know they're very popular so perhaps I'm missing something...
Dandelion beer sounds good - is it proper beer or just a fizzy sweet wine like the nettle version? I made nettle 'beer' once, it was lovely but highly explosive! :)
