Allotment update

Lately I've been harvesting peas, broad beans, potatoes, a few tiny strawberries and the usual leaves and herbs. This evening I would also have dug up my garlic but I accidentally injured myself whilst collecting peas (chopped my finger with scissors!) so I went home early...

I'm getting excited about the fast-approaching runner bean and courgette glut (loads of flowers on both already). My onions, tomatoes and beetroot are all looking promising too. Some would say it's a crime to pickle beetroot but I can't wait (never done it before)!

Unfortunately I seem to be failing with the carrots again, which is a shame because they're one of my favourite vegetables. And no, it's not because I'm trying to grow them in the sky...

  1. It's because you're going to use them to blow up the house of parliament isn't it !!!! (I'm thinking of the Swedish artist who frightened the confused by bundling up carrots with a timer and some wires and putting them in random places).
Yaaay to fresh peas , booo to scissors :(
Have you come across any wild garlic (Or Ramsons)? There is a whole load down towards Grace Dieu abbey on a cycle path I go down. A strong smell and can be cooked in various ways apparently though I think they are past their best now.

  2. I dunno why, but for some reason carrots are hard work this year.

  3. There's a lot of wild garlic growing in the woods near me. The flowers are really pretty, I think I have photos somewhere... I've never cooked with it but I'd like to try. Best time to pick is March/April I think :)

  4. I've never had much luck with carrots. The few I'm growing in pots are just about OK, but the ones I sowed in the ground simply failed to materialise! :(
